SUMMARY:Saturday Social Ride
DESCRIPTION:FLCC Social Weekend Rides normally take place Saturday mornings. They are largely targeted to intermediate riders with a pace of 11-13 mph. They’re intended to be social rides providing exercise but also an opportunity to meet other local riders and learn new routes. \nIf you are seeing this description\, it means a specific route and ride leader has not been selected for this date\, or this page has not been updated – watch the fingerlakescycling Google group (listserv) for announcements! \n\nThe number of weekend rides we can offer will depend greatly on how many volunteers we have to help coordinate\, lead or sweep rides. Please contact Doug Dylla directly if you’d like to help with the FLCC Social Weekend Rides. \nRides will begin at 20+ miles in length and get longer through the season. Riders should bring water\, have bikes in good mechanical condition and be comfortable with group rides on local roads. \nRides will be no-drop\, regrouping at the tops of major hills and intersections when the group is spread out. Rides will often include a social stop which will be mentioned in the weekly ride announcement. \nRide Announcements\nWe hope to send out the announcement about the Social Weekend Rides to the fingerlakescycling group by Wednesday afternoon every week. Generally\, we will plan for Saturday Rides – though bad weather might push some rides into Sundays. If we have enough interest (and volunteers)\, we may do multiple weekend rides. \nMeeting Place and Time\nThe time\, meeting place and route will vary every week and be announced on the fingerlakescycling group. Early in the season\, we start at 10 AM and then shift earlier as the weather gets hotter in the summer.  Please arrive 15 minutes ahead of that time so you can hear the route instructions\, and make sure your bike is ready to go. \nWhat to Bring\nRide organizers expect all riders to have their bicycles in good repair\, a helmet\, water bottles\, a snack\, equipment to fix a flat\, and a copy of the route (usually a Ride with GPS route from the Club route list). \nWeather\nWe generally do not ride if it is raining or if there is a threat of adverse weather.  We will send out an email to the fingerlakescycling group at least an hour before the start time if a ride is canceled. \nRSVP for Rides\nGenerally\, ride leaders will ask for people to RSVP if they plan to attend the Weekend Ride. While this isn’t critical\, it helps the ride organizers know how many people to expect. \nJoin the Finger Lakes Cycling Club\nThe FLCC sponsors our rides.  Non-members are allowed two club rides before we ask that you join the club.

SUMMARY:Swandrome Cyclocross
DESCRIPTION:This is an annual family friendly event with one of the longest continually running cyclocross races in the country on the trails of the Swandrome atop Mt. Pleasant.  While there are numerous categories based on age\, sex\, and types of bikes\, for some of us the real “feature events” are the little kids races. We have everything from tykes on Strider push-bikes up through real geared bikes with distances appropriate for each group.   (Note: kids races are Free)\n\nWe have minimal prizes and put entry fee money into food and drink that is available for all racers and spectators. This makes for a very social event with a good vibe that keeps racers and families hanging out to support each other through all events.\n\nWhile the course has been laid out and relatively manicured for the whole summer\, there will be course prep to do as we get closer to race day. We will announce volunteer work days in the last 2 weeks before the event for mowing\, trimming low branches on some trails\, and putting in stakes and tape to define the race course.  On race day we will need a half-dozen volunteers to manage registration\, pick results\, and manage the different course markings for kids races.\n\nNote that we welcome people to ride (walk or run) on the many trails of the Swandrome at any time\, so come up and practice and bring kids up to get them used to riding and psyched for the event.  If we can get a bunch of families to turn out on some weeknights such that we reach a “critical mass” then it will be even more fun for families\, as kids will have time with friends to look forward to each week.

SUMMARY:Women's Wednesday Road Ride
DESCRIPTION:The Women’s Road Ride (WRR) is a club-sanctioned road ride for women that happens each Wednesday night\, spring\, summer and fall. We like to call ourselves the “Gorges Gals”! They are a great place for women to cycle together\, get a good workout\, and build lasting friendships on the bike. These rides convene in the East Hill Plaza parking lot behind the Burger King at 6pm and break out into 3 groups\, A\, B or C. The A ride is the fastest (typically averaging 15+ mph) and has the most elevation. The B ride is moderately paced (13-15 mph avg) with a moderate amount of climbing\, and the C ride is slower paced (10-12mph avg)\, with shorter distances with less climbing. \nWRR rotates through the same four or so routes each week from mid May until mid September. WRR participants learn the routes and ride them faster and stronger each week\, regardless of whether they are in the A\, B\, or C group. \nGoogle Group: Women’s Road Ride \nFrequently Asked Questions\nQ: How do I participate? \nA: Show up on Wednesday night a little before the start time. \nQ. Do I need to be an FLCC member to participate? \nA: Non-members are expected to join FLCC after their first two rides. \nQ: Do I need special equipment to join WRR? \nA: You need a road bike with gearing that can handle the hilly roads\, blinking lights that fix to you or your bike for safety at dusk\, water bottles with water\, a bicycle helmet\, and tools/parts to fix a flat tire.\nMost women that participate in the rides use road bikes\, however a fitness/hybrid/gravel bike could be appropriate for the C group rides. It really just depends on the pace you can maintain.\nMost participants also ride with clipless pedals\, however\, that is not required and often riders in the C group use flat pedals. \nQ: I’m new here\, how do I know which group I should join? \nA: You should be able to complete the route your group is doing in 2 hours or less. If you are unsure about your ability\, it is always best to first join an easier group and then\, the following week\, join a faster group if you want a more challenging ride. Depending on who shows up\, some of the groups break up into two subgroups if there are riders with really mixed abilities\, so its highly likely you will have someone to ride with. \nQ: I’m a man who rides slow and/or who is looking to improve my group road riding skills. Can I join WRR? \nA: No\, sorry. These rides are for women only. There are other club rides where men are welcome! \nQ: Can tandem or recumbent riders participate? \nA: Typically we do not have riders on recumbent or tandem bikes. However\, if women on recumbent or tandem bikes have experience riding in a group and know that they could maintain the group pace\, we can try it out\, likely in the C group. Our top priority is safety\, so we just want to keep everyone in the group safe on the roads! \nQ: If it is raining\, will we still ride? \nA: If it is sprinkling\, we will probably ride. If it’s raining hard or thundering\, we will cancel. Emails will be sent to the WRR email list by 5pm day of ride if it’s going to be cancelled. Sign up to the mailing list for up-to-date info on the rides. \nQ: I’m not a member of FLCC\, can I still ride with WRR? \nA: We welcome all riders for the first two weeks of riding. If you wish to continue\, then we ask that you pay your dues to FLCC\, which is very affordable. Sign up here! \nQ: Are the rides no drop? \nA: Yes! The rides are no drop\, meaning if you get a flat or have some other mechanical issue\, the group will wait. And the groups all wait and regroup at the top of the climbs and before crossing major intersections (e.g.\, Route 13\, Route 79). But no drop does not mean if you have jumped into a group that is at a higher fitness level than you\, the cyclists will wait for you at each and every corner. It is up to you to know which group to ride with by studying the route and deciding ahead of time if you can complete that route in 2 hours or less. \nQ. What are typical WRR routes? \nA group: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/13756715\nB group: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/13756959\nC group: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/13757026 \nSpread the word to women who are looking to ride. WRR organizers welcome riders of all skill levels and experience\, and will find a group for you.

SUMMARY:Saturday Ride: Black Diamond Trail
DESCRIPTION:We are planning for the first FLCC Weekend Ride for Saturday\, May 21 at 10 AM. The meeting place will be in Cass Park by the Ithaca Children’s Garden. We will ride up the Black Diamond Trail and offer several options of riding (16-22 miles) by only riding the BDT\, or further up to the Taughannock Falls Overlook\, or up to Trumansburg for ice cream at Not My Dad’s and returning to Cass Park.  Look for more details as we get closer to the ride. \nStill have questions or want to plan or lead a ride? Contact Doug Dylla at ddylla2010@gmail.com. \n\nThe number of weekend rides we can offer will depend greatly on how many volunteers we have to help coordinate\, lead or sweep rides. Please contact Doug Dylla directly if you’d like to help with the FLCC Weekend Rides. \nRide Announcements\nWe hope to send out the announcement about the Weekend Rides to the fingerlakescycling group by Wednesday afternoon every week. Generally\, we will plan for Saturday Rides — though bad weather might push some rides into Sundays. We will send out an email to the FLCC Listserv at least an hour before the start time if a ride is canceled.

SUMMARY:Gravel Ride
DESCRIPTION:Gravel rides during the 2022 season will be held on Thursdays at 6:00pm. The starting location (and any changes to the time) will be specified in the ride announcements each week\, sent to both the flcc-gravel and fingerlakescycling groups. \nIf you’re seeing this description\, it means a specific route has not been selected for this date – watch this page for updates! \n\nGravel rides are focused on exploring the gravel\, dirt\, and otherwise unpaved roads and trails in and around Ithaca. If you like to get away from traffic\, occasionally climb a hill just because it’s there\, and don’t mind mud on your clothes then gravel rides are probably for you! \nThese rides are largely targeted to intermediate riders\, although all skill levels are welcome. Gravel rides put an emphasis on bike handling rather than raw speed. They’re intended to be challenging while also social and\, more than anything else\, fun! Rides will be no-drop\, regrouping at the tops of major hills and intersections when the group is spread out. If you have a mechanical issue the group will stop to help before everyone continues on together. The group is sure to spread out periodically based on everyone’s preferred pace\, handling ability\, hill climbing speed\, but no one will be left behind. On weeks where multiple ride leaders attend we will be able to offer additional pace groups to more comfortably accommodate all riders\, which we will also include in the ride announcement when able. \nGravel rides were first offered in 2021. You can review this presentation for a recap the season and what we learned from it. \nA Few Good Questions\nQ: Do I need a special bike?\nNo! There are lots of “gravel” and “adventure” bikes that would be great for these rides\, but really you could get by on almost anything. \nQ: What equipment do I need?\nThe main thing to think about is your tire width and pressure. A rough suggestion would be something wider than 700x30c at 60psi or less. If you don’t know what that means\, it’s okay! Get in touch and we can help you figure out if your bike would be up to the task (it probably is). \nOther than your bike you’ll need blinking lights that fix to you or your bike for safety at dusk\, water bottles with water\, a helmet\, and tools/parts to fix a flat tire. Multiple gears are recommended\, but if you can ride a fixie up Mt. Pleasant then more power to you. \nQ: It’s wet out. Is the ride on?\nYup\, that just makes it more fun! Rides will be cancelled for heavy rain\, thunder and/or lightning\, etc. but otherwise don’t shy away from getting wet or muddy. \nQ: Is this mountain biking?\nNo. But mountain biking is great and is very complimentary to gravel riding\, especially when it comes to bike handling.
