Saturday Road Rides


Saturday rides, which begin in early May and run through October, weather permitting, are no drop rides for cyclists who want to ride at an easier pace (see speed classification) or don't have experience with group bicycle rides.  All are welcome, but non-members are asked to join the FLCC after attending two rides.

Information about the rides is posted on the FLCC calendar.  All routes created by FLCC can be found under the Rides & Routes menu of the website once you join the club and sign in.

Saturday rides are led by a club member who volunteers for this function at the beginning of each ride, and is responsible for keeping track of riders and ensuring that no one is dropped.



Ride Classifications


Rides are classified by difficulty in terms of speed, terrain, and distance.

Speed Classifications

 

    B: 13-16 mph steady pace
    C: 10-13 mph pace, stops at key points to wait for riders
    D: Under 10 mph relaxed pace, frequent stops to wait for everyone

Terrain Classifications


    1. Multiple long and/or steep climbs
    2. Multiple and/or large hills
    3. Rolling with some hills
    4. Generally flat or rolling

For example, C/4/30 designates a 30 mile ride at 10-13 mph pace over flat terrain.

Ride Requirements and Recommendations

Equipment


All riders must come equipped with the following items:

  • Helmet
  • Bicycle pump or CO2 cartridges
  • Spare inner tube
  • Tire levers
  • At least one water bottle
  • Energy bars or similar snacks
  • Cue sheet or route downloaded to phone or GPS. The calendar event will include a link to the RideWithGPS route

The following items are highly recommended:

  • Rear bicycle light
  • Cell phone
  • Clipless pedals

Additional requirements

  • Riders must know how to change a flat tire.
  • Bicycles must be in good working condition.
  • All riders should watch for stragglers and wait for them at turns on the route and at the top of long climbs.
